How to Use X (Twitter) for Beginners: Profile Optimization Strategy That Gets Customers

If you're new to X and want to actually grow your business, this is exactly where you need to start. I created my account just a few years ago and grown my business from using X, and I'm going to share the exact organic strategy that's gotten me results.

Quick Answer: Optimize your X profile before posting anything, focus on consistent branding that people will remember, and use the "support others first" strategy to build genuine connections that convert into customers.

Time Required: 30 minutes for initial setup, ongoing relationship building

Best For: Business owners new to X who want to get customers, not just followers

My name is Brad Smith, owner of Automation Links. I've been doing this marketing stuff for the last 10 years, working with over 2500 brands. I'm going to show you exactly the best place for you to start, how to get more followers, and actually how to get customers.

How to Research Before You Start Posting on X

Before I even create my first post, I always do research first. What I usually do is go and Google some things like "how to use X for beginners," and I go and try to do a little research before I actually start on a platform.

I'm also really enjoying using Grok to help me with these answers. When I ask Grok this, it gives me just a normal general way where if you're just starting, you've never started on X before, it's going to tell you to start from the very beginning: Sign up, verify, choose your username, set your profile picture, understand the features. This would be a really good way to do that.

Why Profile Optimization is the #1 Priority Before You Post

From there, what I like to do is go into my profile, and I want to encourage you to really optimize your profile here. Before you start even tweeting or posting, try to get a really strong image of yourself or your brand.

Profile Picture Strategy That Builds Trust

This is something that people are going to relate to that they're going to remember. Now, if you go and switch this and change this all the time, what I've noticed is people forget about you and they think you're a totally different account. If you're trying to build a following and people that trust you, like you, want to engage with you, keep this profile picture the same so they remember you.

Banner Selection: Business vs Personal Connection

The banner, I've played around with a banner quite a bit. A lot of people do business style banners here. I like to do something that is a hobby or something that I enjoy doing. So, my wife and I go on the boat a lot, and I talk about that. I talk about going on the boat, talk about working with my wife.

If you like pickle ball, do something of pickle ball there. If you like golf, something of golf. Now, if you want to keep it strictly business related, feel free to put some sort of business banner there.

For my YouTube channel, right here is a normal banner that you could put there. So, for YouTube, I like putting my business banner there, but for X, I like doing a hobby banner to make it more relatable. Something like this, something that's valuable.

How to Drive Traffic to Your Landing Page from X

Looking at this, this is the exact organic strategy that we use for our business - we try to get people to a landing page after they find us on X.

The more value, the more helpful you can be in these comments and posts, what's going to happen is people are going to see that I've liked a bunch of their posts. They're going to see that I followed them, and then their followers, the other people that are leaving comments, they're going to see that as well.

Key Point: The goal isn't just followers - it's getting qualified prospects to your landing page where you can capture leads and nurture them into customers.

How It Works: Provide genuine value in comments and posts, build relationships first, then naturally guide people to your business offerings.

Time to See Results: Immediate engagement, 30-90 days for significant business growth

Tools Needed: X account, landing page, email automation system

The "Support Others First" Strategy That Actually Works

If I go all the way to the top, they're going to see that I recently left a comment here and other people are going to start seeing that. So then what I could go do is I can go look at Jason's post here - I'm going to look at his profile. He serves people in business that want to win. This would be a great person that I would want to follow me.

So what I want to do is go support him first. And that's the biggest thing I want to teach you on X: go support others first. In return, they'll start supporting you back.

Critical Rule: Never Use AI for Comments

As a quick tip, do not use AI to write these comments. People can tell. Put in your own two cents. Provide value. Help by providing education. Share your experiences.

Content Strategy Based on Your Experience Level

Another quick tip: if you're brand new, talk about the journey of what you're building right now. If you're experienced, give lessons and education to people below you that can learn from you that you can provide value to as well.

  • How long should I spend on X daily as a beginner?

Start with 15-20 minutes daily focusing on genuine engagement rather than broadcasting. Quality interactions matter more than quantity.

  • What's the biggest mistake new X users make?

Using AI to write comments or trying to sell immediately. People can tell when you're not being authentic, and it kills relationship building.

  • Should I use a personal or business profile picture?

I recommend personal photos because people connect with faces, not logos. Keep it consistent once you choose - changing it frequently makes people forget you.

  • How do I know if someone is worth connecting with?

Look at their profile and recent posts. Do they serve people similar to your ideal customers? Are they actively engaging in meaningful conversations?

  • When should I start promoting my business on X?

Only after you've built relationships and provided value first. I recommend at least 2-3 weeks of pure value-giving before any business promotion.

  • What type of content performs best for business accounts?

Educational content, behind-the-scenes insights, and lessons learned perform better than sales pitches. Share your journey and expertise.

  • How often should I post on X?

Focus on commenting and engaging first. When you do post, 1-2 valuable posts per day are better than 10 promotional posts.

  • What's the best time to be active on X?

When your target audience is online. For business accounts, this is typically during business hours in your target market's timezone.

  • How do I handle negative comments or criticism?

Respond professionally and use it as an opportunity to show your character. How you handle criticism publicly demonstrates your business values.

  • Should I follow back everyone who follows me?

No, be strategic. Follow accounts that align with your business goals and where you can build meaningful relationships.
